India vs Eastern Europe vs Latin America for AI development

By Irshad Memon|Updated

Short answer

On published 2026 rates, senior developers cost $31 to $41 an hour in Asia, $60 to $75 in Latin America and $64 to $76 in Central and Eastern Europe (2026 rate survey). India costs least and can cover UK mornings. Latin America shares most of a US working day. Eastern Europe shares most of a UK day and sits inside the EU's data rules.

Key takeaways

  • Senior developer rates in 2026: $31 to $41 an hour in Asia, $60 to $75 in Latin America, $64 to $76 in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Latin America overlaps 6 to 7 hours with a US Eastern working day. India overlaps none unless the team works an evening shift.
  • Poland and Romania overlap 6 to 7 hours with a UK working day. India overlaps 2.5 to 3.5 hours on normal hours, more if the team shifts its day.
  • Personal data sent from the UK or EU to India needs a transfer mechanism. Data sent to an EU country does not.
  • Decide on overlap hours and data rules first, then compare rates.

How do AI development rates compare across India, Eastern Europe and Latin America?

A 2026 survey of software development partners puts senior developers at $31 to $41 an hour in Asia, $60 to $75 in Latin America and $64 to $76 in Central and Eastern Europe. These cover general software developers, so treat them as a floor for AI work. For a 160-hour month, that is about $5,000 to $6,600 in Asia and $9,600 to $12,200 elsewhere.

Regional figures are published survey ranges, not quotes, multiplied by 160 hours. Our monthly plans are about 15% below our hourly rate.

Rates are only half the cost. A cheaper team that needs more of your time, or works while you sleep, can cost more in the end. That is why the next two sections matter as much as this one.

How many working hours overlap with US and UK teams?

With both sides on 09:00 to 17:00 local time, Latin America shares 6 to 7 hours with US Eastern time and Eastern Europe shares 6 to 7 hours with the UK. India shares 2.5 to 3.5 hours with the UK and none with the US East Coast, unless the team moves its working day.

Mexico City (UTC−6, no daylight saving)6 to 7 hours behind1 to 2 hours behind1 to 26 to 7

Ranges cover the UK and US daylight saving changes. For a few weeks each spring and autumn, Europe and the US change their clocks on different dates, so some gaps move by an hour.

Teams can move their hours, and many offshore teams do. Ours cover 09:00 to 13:00 UK time every working day, inside a normal Indian working day, at no extra cost, and 09:00 to 12:00 US Eastern time through an evening shift, at 15% extra. Whoever you hire, write the shared hours into the contract.

What are the data protection rules for each region?

For UK and EU companies, sending personal data to an EU country such as Poland or Romania needs no extra transfer paperwork. India has no UK or EU adequacy decision, so a transfer there needs a mechanism such as the UK IDTA or the EU's standard contractual clauses, plus a written assessment of the transfer's risks.

  • UK companies: the UK treats every EEA country as adequate, along with Argentina and Uruguay, among others (ICO). The ICO's own example of a restricted transfer is a UK business using an organisation in India for customer service (ICO).
  • EU companies: the European Commission's adequacy list includes Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. India, Mexico and Colombia are not on it (European Commission).
  • Without adequacy: UK companies can use the IDTA or the UK Addendum to the EU clauses, with a transfer risk assessment. EU companies use standard contractual clauses, with a transfer impact assessment.
  • Engineers who reach personal data on your systems from abroad count as a transfer, even if the data never leaves your servers.

None of this stops you hiring in India. It means a few extra pages of contract, and a team that works inside your systems with the access it needs and no more. Our security page sets out how we handle this, and what we don't have.

Which region should you choose?

Choose by the shared hours and data rules you need first, then compare rates. India suits budget-led work with UK mornings or a few US hours. Latin America suits US teams that want a shared day. Eastern Europe suits UK and EU teams that want a shared day and data kept inside the EEA.

A US team on a budget that can live with a few shared hoursIndia, with an evening shift

The team matters more than the region. Wherever you hire, check these:

  • You interview the named engineers who will do the work.
  • They can show AI work that real users relied on, not only demos.
  • The shared hours are written into the contract.
  • The contract assigns the IP in all code to you, and the vendor signs your NDA first.
  • There is a trial period on your real work before a long commitment.

Where does Webify.AI fit?

Webify.AI is headquartered in Ahmedabad, India, so we are one of the India options in this comparison and have an interest in it. Our AI / LLM engineers cost $45 an hour, with UK-morning overlap included and US Eastern mornings on an evening shift.

  • We suit companies that want India's rates with fixed overlap hours: 09:00 to 13:00 UK time every working day, inside a normal Indian working day, at no extra cost.
  • Two-week trial with the developer you choose. No charge if you stop within the first five working days.
  • We sign your NDA before the first call, and the IP in all code is assigned to you.
  • We are not the right choice if you need a full US working day of overlap, data processed only inside the EEA, or a vendor with ISO 27001 or SOC 2. We hold neither.

Frequently asked questions

Is India cheaper than Eastern Europe for AI development?

On published rates, yes. A 2026 survey of software development partners puts senior developers at $31 to $41 an hour in Asia and $64 to $76 in Central and Eastern Europe. Check the overlap hours and management time too, because they change the real cost.

Can an Indian AI team work US hours?

Some can, usually on an evening shift. Ours covers 09:00 to 12:00 US Eastern time at 15% extra. If you need a full shared US working day, Latin America is a better fit.

Can a UK company send personal data to a team in India?

Yes, with a transfer mechanism such as the IDTA or the UK Addendum, plus a transfer risk assessment. The ICO treats a UK business using an organisation in India as a restricted transfer.

Which region has the most AI engineers?

We have not found a cross-country count of AI engineers that we could check at the source, so we don't quote one. Ask any vendor for named profiles instead.

Do these rates apply to AI engineers or all developers?

The survey's ranges cover senior software developers in general. AI specialists usually cost more in every region, so treat the ranges as a floor for AI work.
