How much does it cost to build an AI agent in 2026?

By Shaziya Shaikh, AI Engineer at Webify.AI|Updated

Short answer

By our planning estimates, an assistant that reads your business systems takes 480 to 960 hours to build, and an agent that takes actions 800 to 1,600 hours. That is $22,800 to $84,000 at our rates, or $59,520 to $384,000 at US staffing-agency rates. Running costs come on top: model usage, hosting and maintenance time.

Key takeaways

  • An assistant connected to business systems: 480 to 960 hours by our planning estimates. An agent that takes actions: 800 to 1,600 hours.
  • At our rates that is $22,800 to $45,600 and $42,000 to $84,000. At US staffing-agency rates, $59,520 to $384,000.
  • Plan 20 to 40 hours a month of maintenance in the first months, plus model usage and hosting.
  • Integrations, permissions and testing drive the cost more than the model does.
  • Start with one task, written success criteria and a pilot before committing to the full build.

What does an AI agent cost to build?

It depends mostly on what the agent may do. An assistant that reads live data for a signed-in user takes 480 to 960 hours by our planning estimates. An agent that creates, changes or books things in your systems takes 800 to 1,600 hours, because every action needs limits, approval steps and testing.

Hours are our planning estimates for a first version, not quotes. Our rates are blended across the two engineers each type needs. Asia senior rates are a 2026 survey's $31 to $41 an hour; US rates are a US staffing firm's published bill rates. Our cost guide shows every calculation.

A simpler knowledge-base assistant, which only answers from your documents, takes 240 to 480 hours by the same estimates. Private agents that run offline on your own hardware start with a fixed-price pilot from $1,000, set out on our private AI page.

What drives the cost of an AI agent?

Integrations, actions and testing. Each system the agent touches needs connecting, securing and testing. Each action needs a limit, an approval rule for risky cases and a log. And the agent must be tested against real requests, including attempts to trick it, before it goes live.

  • Systems: how many the agent connects to, and whether they have usable APIs.
  • Actions: what the agent may change, within which limits, and which actions a person must approve.
  • Data: whether your documents and records are clean, current and accessible.
  • Accuracy: how good is good enough, measured on a test set of real requests.
  • Security: testing for the OWASP Top 10 risks for LLM applications, including prompt injection and "Excessive Agency" (OWASP).
  • Reach: extra languages, channels and user groups each add design and testing.

What does an AI agent cost to run each month?

Model usage, hosting and people time. Agents cost more to run than chatbots, because one request can trigger several model and tool calls. By our planning estimates, maintenance takes 20 to 40 hours a month in the first months, which is $1,050 to $2,100 at our blended rate.

  • Model usage: billed per token by your provider. In our worked example, 5,000 conversations a month cost $13 on a small model and $260 on a mid-priced one, before an agent's extra tool calls.
  • Hosting: the server, database and logs, in your own cloud account.
  • Maintenance: reviewing conversations, updating content and rules, and retesting after model changes.
  • Monitoring: someone on your side reads samples, watches costs and handles what the agent hands over.

How can you keep the cost of an AI agent down?

Start with the simplest thing that works. One AI model provider's own guidance is to find "the simplest solution possible", which "might mean not building agentic systems at all". Automate one task first, use the smallest model that passes your tests, and add actions only where they pay.

  • Use a workflow before an agent: fixed steps with one AI step are cheaper to build and test (agent-building guidance).
  • Start with one task and one or two systems, then expand.
  • Pick the smallest model that passes your test set.
  • Adapt a pre-trained agent from our Bot Store where one fits, rather than building from scratch.
  • Cap usage per user, so a script or an attacker cannot run up your bill.

How should you budget for an AI agent?

In stages, with a decision at each one. Agree written success criteria before building, prove them in a pilot on one workflow with your own data, and only then pay for the full production build. Many pilots never show a return, so a clear finish line protects your budget.

  1. 1

    Discovery

Pick one task, check data and access, and write down what success looks like.

  2. 2

    Pilot

Build the agent for that task in your accounts, on your own data, and score it against the success criteria.

  3. 3

    Decide

Go to production, change the scope, or stop. What has been built so far is yours.

  4. 4

    Production and running

Integrations, limits, approvals, logging and monitoring, then a monthly budget for usage and maintenance.

Why the finish line matters: MIT research, as reported in the business press, found that about 95% of enterprise generative AI pilots produce little measurable profit impact (report).

Where does Webify.AI fit?

We build AI agents, so we have an interest in this guide. Our AI / LLM engineers cost $45 an hour and senior AI engineers $60. A defined project is quoted in writing after discovery, before any build starts.

  • A first agent scoped to one task with one or two integrations typically takes six to twelve weeks from discovery to production.
  • Agents run with limited permissions, ask a person to approve risky actions, and log every step.
  • The code, prompts and test sets go into your repositories, and the IP is assigned to you.
  • We hold no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification. Our security page explains what we do instead.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a simple AI agent cost?

A knowledge-base assistant that only answers from your documents takes 240 to 480 hours by our planning estimates, or $8,400 to $16,800 at our rates. Connecting it to your systems or letting it take actions costs more.

Why does an AI agent cost more than a chatbot?

Because it acts. Every action needs a system integration, limits, an approval rule for risky cases, logging and testing, including tests where someone tries to trick it.

What are the monthly costs of an AI agent?

Model usage billed by your provider, hosting, and maintenance time. By our planning estimates, maintenance is 20 to 40 hours a month in the first months for an agent.

Can I get a fixed price for an AI agent?

Yes, for a defined scope. We quote a fixed price in writing after discovery, before any build starts. Private offline agents start with a fixed-price pilot from $1,000.

How long does it take to build an AI agent?

A first agent scoped to one task with one or two integrations typically takes six to twelve weeks from discovery to production. Our timeline guide explains each stage.
